DO NOT USE FACEBOOK!
On a mailing list MIT CSAIL, a thread was started by some students asking for votes over facebook as they were competing for a chance to win $100K.
Hi all,
A few MIT current students and alumni (previously on the GPI action team)
are working on an exciting project to help *MIT students and international
development volunteers*! We are competing on Facebook and if we get enough
votes (if we can make 5th place or higher) we have the chance to win $100K!
*It takes 1 minute to vote on Facebook and you can disable the app
immediately after voting!*We are building *an International Development Project Database and Mentor
Connection** *that gathers detailed information about international service
projects. Future students and volunteers will be able to build upon
previous work (use previous designs, materials) instead of starting from
scratch. Experts and previous volunteers will help students form their
projects and prepare for on the ground work in specific regions.*We would
extremely appreciate your vote!*
Dr. Stallman response tells us that he hates facebook from all his heart. His response can be checked here. He said:
Facebook is not your friend. Its “real name” policy is enough reason to refuse to use it, but there is so much more nastiness in Facebook. I don’t use it, and you shouldn’t either.
He even said:
Facebook is an international parasitism project.
Read full reply here.
He brought up pretty strong points to justify his hatred. What do you say? Leave comments.
I do agree with the GNU father.
And it is not an unappreciated attitude in my opinion. He is frank , that is all.
I used Facebook for about one year, and when Google+ was launched, I moved.
Actually, 90% of my circles in Google+ have moved from Facebook to Google+ and most of them free software users, developers, engineers, contributors….etc
Women are a rarety in G+! While in FB, that’s the brother ad that was enough for me to quit FB besides the privacy crap and the cookies thing, timeline…..
RMS hates anything that allows other people to track you, Facebook is the worst of the lot. Mark owns more info about us than any govt. So he hates it. I find G+ better for its privacy but RMS hates google because it tracks your searches.
100% agree, Facebook attempts a massive violation of privacy. They can find some other way to gain funding for development projects outside of Facebook.
I believe G+ also has a ‘real name’ policy. And, of course, it’s owned by Google, who already knows all your search queries (unless you use startpage) and most of your browsing history (unless you use NoScript). You guys should realize that switching to G+ is not a bit better.
For real privacy, set up a Diaspora and share it with friends.
Stallman is actually pretty nuts. Like a lot of what he says borders on stoned 40 year hippie shit. But he’s a smart dude and I get where he’s coming from most of the time.
He’s actually a hero of mine for quite some time ( no joke ).
You can simply read on his site why he doesn’t like Facebook – he brings up very compelling arguments.
Disagree with Stallman… Sometime people behave like nuts
Why do you bother to ask our opinion if your opinion in this matter is biased as evident from the title of this post. People like me do appreciate Stallman’s stand but you have given the title “Not so appreciated attitude”.
Stallman is a brilliant visionary. He is human and not always right about things from a practical perspective, especially when it comes to building a thriving commercial Linux industry. However, nobody who considers themselves technically or computer literate should use Facebook or similar services unless you want a means to promote yourself. On this issue Stallman is 100% correct.
I agree with RMS wholeheartedly.
